Why study at British Columbia's largest college: Douglas College

Find out what Douglas College has to offer and why it is a top choice for international students interested in studying in Vancouver.

British Columbia (BC) boasts the best of Canadian weather and landscape. Therefore, it is not a surprise that many international students consider BC, particularly Metro Vancouver, as their top destination. Whether you love to hike or visit quaint cafes during your study break, Metro Vancouver caters to young students and young-at-hearts in an inclusive and vibrant environment.

At the heart of Metro Vancouver lies Douglas College, BC’s largest college offering the greatest number of bachelor’s degrees supplemented by a range of post-degree and graduate programs, university transfer offerings, and career entry programs. It serves more than 25,000 students, 18% of whom are international students from more than 90 countries. Its two main campuses are located in Metro Vancouver, specifically in the beautiful cities of New Westminster and Coquitlam, both accessible by public transport and surrounded by student-friendly housings and amenities.

A recent survey of existing Douglas College students reveals why it is their top choice for post-secondary education, and why Douglas College is a great place to study in BC:

1. Extensive programs and courses offered

The college is focused on providing a range of courses and degrees that will accommodate the constantly evolving labour market and student demands. Whether you are into health science or business, starting your bachelor’s degree or looking for ways to upgrade your credentials with a post-degree diploma, or even interested in a specific course that will augment a skill in your current profession, Douglas College has something for you.

2. Location

New Westminster and Coquitlam are both lively cities with a lot of things to offer, ensuring that students find balance between life and study. Students interested in having part-time jobs can find a range of opportunities within the campus, or in neighbourhood offices, retail stores, restaurants, and manufacturing facilities.

3. Cost

Douglas College is one of the most affordable post-secondary institutions in Metro Vancouver, with CAD$ 600/credit tuition fee or ~ CAD$9,000 per semester (15 credits) for international students. The college has merit-based scholarships for international students exemplifying excellence in their field of study.

With its lower fees and transferable credits, a significant number of students take an associate degree (2 years) in Douglas and finish the last two years of their bachelor’s at a Canadian top university such as SFU or UBC. This university transfer mechanism leads to a total savings of more than CAD$30,000 for international students.

Quality of Instruction

Douglas limits its class size to 35 students, ensuring high interactions with professors who are academe and industry experts. Classroom instructions, either in person or online, are supplemented by opportunities for hands-on learning in field works, co-op, and practicum relevant to the degree.

“Do what you love. Be good at it”. This is the motto of Douglas College. With extensive program offerings, students can definitely find a program that suits their inclinations. Coupled with experiential learning and job-readiness opportunities, Douglas graduates are well-equipped with the right skill sets to join and thrive in the growing Canadian labour market.
