The Best Postsecondary School to Study At on Beautiful Vancouver Island

The run-down of North Island College's beautiful Vancouver Island campuses.

North Island College (NIC) educates more than 8,000 students per year, and has educated more than 150,000 students in its 45-year history. As of 2020, NIC offers more than 100 subjects for students across several academic disciplines, including some programs specifically for international students. NIC has continued to grow since its founding in 1975. What started as a portable trailer and a few converted school buses in the city of Campbell River has now grown into several campuses and facilities throughout Vancouver Island. Here’s what you need to know about NIC’s locations:

  • Campbell River Approximately a three-hour drive 260 kilometres northwest of Victoria along Vancouver Island’s east coast.
  • The campus shares its space with Timberline Secondary school, the only college campus in Canada that shares facilities with a high school. This provides a seamless transition for students who choose to pursue postsecondary education upon their high school graduation, or for high school students seeking to begin their trades learning while still in high school.
  • The campus notably offers programs in Business Administration, Adult Basic Education, Tourism and Hospitality, and several Trades programs. It is also home to Third Course Bistro, a restaurant that serves dishes prepared by Culinary students.
  • Comox Valley Approximately a two-and-a-half-hour drive 220 kilometres northwest of Victoria along Vancouver Island’s east coast.
  • The largest of NIC’s campuses, it contains several lecture halls along with a theatre, a dedicated trades training centre, a group of several portable trailers known as ‘The Village’, and Shadbolt Studios for fine arts students to craft ceramics, paintings, and sculptures.
  • Port Alberni Approximately a two-and-a-half-hour drive 190 kilometres northwest of Victoria nestled in central Vancouver Island near the end of the Alberni Inlet.
  • The campus is composed of one central building and specializes in teaching Nursing, Early Childhood Care and Education, and University Transfer among other programs.
  • Located nearby is the Tebo Vocational Centre which provides hands-on training for shop and equipment handling for trades students.
  • Port Hardy Approximately a five-and-a-half-hour drive 500 kilometres northwest of Victoria along Vancouver Island’s east coast.
  • The campus’ location is meant to be central for students in surrounding communities, such as Port Hardy, Port McNeill, and Fort Rupert – each less than a one hour drive away.
  • Ucluelet Approximately a four-hour drive 300 kilometres northwest of Victoria along Vancouver Island’s west coast.
  • The NIC Learning Centre teaches several programs including associate degrees in Arts or Sciences, and programs focused on Health Care, Business, University Transfer, and Adult Basic Education.
