This comprehensive program provides students with both academic studies and practical experience to understand mechanical techniques, heating and cooling equipment, and air conditioning theory. This two-year Ontario College Diploma Program has a co-op option, which is highly recommended to maximize the experiential learning of students.

This program is offered at Woodstock/Oxford Regional Campus. As part of the community, different kinds of facilities are available to students, including Southwood Arena, Woodstock Rotary Skate/Bike Park, Woodstock Hospital, and shops.

Although the title “Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Technician diploma” seems like a mouthful, it equips students with workable knowledge and industrial skills. Students will fully master how to install, service, and troubleshoot heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. The curriculum also covers courses related to business, such as Introduction to Business Processes, and application-design, such as HVAC Design Computer Applications. These courses provide students with highly employable skills that will help them stand out and land a job in the building and construction industry.

In Ontario, anyone who wants to work as a gas technician has to acquire the Certification of Gas Technician, which is granted by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA). Graduates from Fanshawe’s Heating, Refrigeration, and Air Conditioning Technician program are eligible to write the Gas Technician II and Gas Technician III certificate exams and put their knowledge and practical experience to use. Gas technicians in Ontario earn between CAD $20 to 35 per hour.

This program has a well-established reputation in the industry. Job opportunities are available to graduates not only in development and testing laboratories or HRAC companies, but also with equipment manufacturers and construction companies. Graduates interested in installing, servicing, and maintaining the heating and cooling systems can choose to work as refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics. Entry-level HRAC technicians can expect to earn an hourly wage of CAD $17.50, while those with more experience can earn as high as CAD $47.5/hour. Job prospects are good across Canada, especially in the provinces of British Columbia, Ontario, and Prince Edward Island.
