Be On-Air With Fanshawe’s Journalism Program!

This article aims to introduce the program structure, academic pathways, and students' testimony of Fanshawe's Journalism (Broadcast) Program.

Does journalism sound attractive to you? Have you ever imagined a news story presented by you to reach hundreds of thousands of people? Fanshawe College’s Journalism (Broadcast) program can help turn that into reality.

Fanshawe has the largest news station, 106.9 The X, in the city of London, Ontario. Remarkably, this news station is entirely run by students. Students enrolled in Fanshawe’s Journalism (Broadcast) program have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience through creating content and producing videos for 106.9 The X. From operating news production equipment to writing news stories in broadcast style, students can apply their knowledge to produce news by themselves under the guidance of professors. In addition to 106.9 The X, Fanshawe also provides students with practical training on other College broadcast properties (such as CIXX-FM, The Falcon, CFRL Radio, and Stellar Radio).

Another unique aspect of Fanshawe’s Journalism (Broadcast) program is that students are encouraged to engage in the whole process of producing news, starting from traveling around the community to collect sources and news stories. Additionally, thanks to the agreement reached between Fanshawe College and Radio Fanshawe Inc., the X-FM Newsroom is available to students 24 hours a day (with detailed arrangement) from September to May, which gives students additional time to engage in every link of producing news.

Thanks to the Fanshawe’s academic Pathways, it is possible for students to transfer their credits towards a higher degree across Canada and worldwide. If you want to enjoy Australia’s coastal scenery, you can transfer credit towards the Bachelor of Communication and Journalism offered by Griffith University. If you want to experience an authentic English lifestyle, Manchester Metropolitan University’s BA (Hons) Multimedia Journalism is a good option. For those interested in transferring across Canada, an agreement developed between Fanshawe College and Western University provides qualified students an opportunity to obtain both a two-year Journalism (Broadcast) diploma at Fanshawe, and a four-year Bachelor of Arts honours degree (with a major in Media, Information and Techno-culture) at Western University.

Various career paths are available to students who graduate from this program. Students who would like to pursue further knowledge in television news can apply for a one-year Broadcast Journalism - Television News program offered by Fanshawe. For those who want to develop a career in broadcasting, Fanshawe’s competitive program makes various positions available to Fanshawe’s graduates, such as Newscasters, On-Air Reporters, News Editors and Writers, Sportscasters, Current Affairs Producers, and News Directors.

“As soon as (the prospective employer) saw I was from Fanshawe's journalism program, they were immediately interested in me. My diploma in journalism from Fanshawe is really the most valuable piece of paper I own!” ----Jessica Gray (Graduate 2008)
