TRU Computing Science – The Great Career and Studying Possibilities

Thompson Rivers University (TRU) Computing Science programs

The world needs and is dependent on computers. Even if your work is not focussed around AI, virtual reality, or machine learning you are likely to work with computers during your studies and your career. You can focus your entire education and career on computers in the form of Thompson Rivers University’s (TRU’s) Computing Science program with the Faculty of Science. TRU offers computing science in a variety of ways.

  • At the undergraduate level:The Bachelor of Computing Science (BCS) is a four-year program, the first two-years are considered general study with several required classes and open electives, and the last two-years are focussed on computing science and some electives.
  • The Bachelor of Science – Major in Computing Science is similarly structured to the BCS program, but with less open electives in the first two-years of study as the courses are structured to educate students with a broader base of science curriculum.
  • A Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and Mathematics - two complementary fields of study - is also offered by TRU, though there are less choices for elective courses during the four-year program.
  • Studying Computer Science as your minor is also possible by completing a set amount of upper-level computer science courses and a particular math course.
  • Other possibilities not at the undergraduate level:The Computer Science Diploma is a two-year, 20-course program available to high grade 12 or mature students, the credits can also count towards an undergraduate program.
  • If you meet the requirements, you can also pursue a two-year Associate of Science Degree with a major in Computing Science, this program is typically more flexible than a Bachelor Degree and provides students with a base of science curriculum so you can choose if and how you want to continue your studies.

Depending on international fees, and before factoring in living or residency costs, you can expect to pay up to CAD $17,000 per year for a Bachelor or Diploma program. Co-operative education and internships are strongly encouraged by TRU for Computing Science students. Using what you have learned in classes in real work settings not only improves your abilities, but also helps you network with professionals and companies for when you graduate and enter the workforce.

As a computer scientist, you can work with a wide mix of software and hardware in a variety of industries. The Government of Canada projects strong employment opportunities and growth over the next 10-years for various computer-related professions, though competition among job seekers could be high. Hourly wages, depending on the province or territory in Canada, can start as low $20/hour but experienced professionals can earn in excess of $40/hour in urban centres. Some notable professions include IT Support, Computer Programmer, Telecommunication Administration, Game Development, and Web Design among others.
