Power in Data: Douglas College New Post-Degree Diploma in Data Analytics
Interested in data analytics? This article presents the new Douglas College PDD in Data Analytics program and how it will train you to become a leader in this high-demand profession.
“Data is the new oil.” This statement has been all over the internet in the past decade. Coined by Clive Humby, it explains that data is a resource that should be mined and analysed, else it is useless. Interestingly, it could also mean that the most powerful corporations now are those that have massive volumes of data, similar to how global corporate powerhouses are those that have had huge market share in oil production and supply chain for more than half a century. The trend all points towards digitization, data mining, information technology, machine learning, robotics, and more. Hence, it is without a doubt that Data Analytics can be among the most relevant and most in-demand courses anywhere in the world.
Douglas College will be offering a Post-degree Diploma (PDD) in Data Analytics starting in May 2021. It is a one-year intensive program that will equip students with specialized technical skills in data technology and business intelligence, making them job-ready to fill in the shortage of supply for qualified data analytics professionals.
To apply, students must meet the general college admission requirements, and hold an undergraduate degree from a recognized post-secondary institution. Students who hold a non-STEM or non-business undergraduate degree should provide proof of proficiency in the field of business and technology through work experience or by undertaking extra course work.
The PDD in Data Analytics requires attaining 30 credits, equivalent to completion of 10 courses. As it is an intensive program, seven courses are mandatory and focus on data analysis and systems design. The remaining three courses are a combination of statistics, and two elective courses with options including Customer Relationship Management (CRM), operations management, and web-based scripting, among others.
Graduates of this program can expect employment as data analysts or data scientists not only in the IT industry, but also in consulting, management, engineering, government, and a variety of other sectors. As the world acknowledges the power of data, industries and corporations will require their own data experts to interpret, present, and leverage this valuable resource.
According to the Labour Market Report from the Government of Canada, data scientists/data analysts have good job prospects across all Canadian provinces, with the employment sector expected to face labour shortage in this specialized field between 2019-2028 at the national level. Data analytics professionals earn between CAD $18 to CAD $51 per hour, with a median of CAD $34 per hour.
Getting your Post-degree Diploma at British Columbia’s largest college, Douglas College, means exposing yourself to a globalized approach in learning, with focus on the essential skills that will help you become a successful data analyst. Furthermore, with a recent microtrend of Silicon Valley companies looking for headquarters in Vancouver, the timing for pursuing a Data Analytics degree at the heart of BC has never been more perfect.
